Why cetaceans?

Cetaceans and their ocean home inspire millions of people and yet suffer the consequences of our activity. From climate change to increased maritime shipping, from commercial whaling to marine pollution, and from seismic testing to captures for captivity, cetaceans and their habitat face innumerable pressures. In addition, cetaceans are subject to one of the largest ecotourism industries on the earth, generating USD 2.1 billion per annum in over 120 countries worldwide.

As important contributors to the ocean ecosystem and as barometers of the health of the marine environment, protection to the full extent of our scientific and practical knowledge is crucial if we are to safeguard our blue planet. It is also our responsibility to ensure that the legal protection of cetaceans corresponds to the increased understanding of the highly evolved cognitive and social capabilities of cetaceans.

What Good is Knowledge Without Application?

As global practices, science, and public opinion evolve, so too should our laws. Together, we are working to bridge the gap between knowledge and policy. Together, we are improving the legal landscapes that protect cetaceans and the oceans where they live.
