Supporting Processes to Protect Dominica’s Sperm Whales

The island of Dominica, a Caribbean Island nicknamed the Nature Island, is a unique whale-watching destination that provides visitors the opportunity to view their resident population of sperm whales. On behalf of the World Cetacean Alliance, and in cooperation with the Discover Dominica Authority, Cet Law is leading a stakeholder consultation process in Dominica to design a workshop that will bring government, business, researchers, not-for-profits and others together. The consultation process and workshop will identify issues facing Dominica’s whale-watching industry and the whale populations, find solutions to the most critical concerns prior to 2017 cruise season starting in October, and create a plan to support their whale populations and the economies dependent on them. Stakeholders will also consider whether they will pursue becoming a Whale Heritage Site.
